In a battle for sole possession of first place Mauston took on the #1 ranked Wisconsin Dells team. Unfortunately this was a very ugly game and there really wasn't much good to be said about this game. Like I said in my last post about the Dells play, Tuesday night was just the opposite. Like I said the Dells relys on shooting threes and running the fast break. On Tuesday they weren't able to get either of these two things going. The Dells shot about 20 % from three point range and even though they were getting the long offensive rebounds they had some possessions where they would actually miss three, three point shots before Mauston finally got the offensive rebound. Luckily for the Dells their defense and Mauston's missed bunny shots was just enough to get them the win.
For Mauston, just like the last two years, it was the Joel Heesch show. Heesch was probably the best player on the court tonight and seemed to have an unlimited amount of energy. He was the one that would start their fast breaks and the one that would get back and stop the Dells fast break. One thing I noticed in this game he really looked for his team mates a lot more then years past and had some very nice no look passes. Unfortunately for Heesch and Mauston so nice dishes seemed to result in numerous missed layups. Heesch just couldn't get enough help. Honestly if Mauston would of made all their two foot shots they probably would of one this game.
I know this is shot but, there just isn't much to say. Mauston is now doubt a one man team and if that one man gets hot they may be able to beat some teams they shouldn't One the Dells side, yes their starting five is very good but, they get almost nothing off their bench and once again they are severely undersized. I didn't mention the two Dells starts MJ Delmore and Shane Wimann but, they just didn't have good games. Delmore could not find his shot at all and got most of his points late in the game from the free throw line. Wimann didn't get a lot of touches and had some sort of a hip injury late in the game that limited him some in the second half.
Top Players
Colyn Buss 6'2 senior Wisconsin Dells- Was one of the Dells players that actually did drive the ball to the hoop and score. When he did drive the ball the middle just seemed to open up because the defenders were so worried about to the kick out to the three point line.
Joel Heesch 6'3 senior Mauston- I said most of what needed to be said earlier. He was also able to hit the mid range jumper and elevate over defenders to get his shot off. He is a true one man show.
Box Score (starters in italics)
Wisconsin Dells 49- Buss 16 Delmore 11 Mike Dickman 11 Wimann 9 Sean Kendall 2 Dan Sweeney 0 Tyler Young 0
Mauston 38- Heesch 17 Skylar Reicks 10 Hunter Nelson 5 Garrett Manthe 4 Tyler Krattiger 2 Ross Thompson 0 Brent Stoughtenger 0
