Sun Prairie gets big conference win

Finally got a chance to watch Sun Prairie this year and see what was going on with them. Before the year myself and most people who follow high school basketball thought Sun Prairie would battle Madison Memorial for the top spot in the conference. Thus far in the year Sun Prairie has been fairly disappointing going 3-3 after their win on Friday night. Their star 6'2 junior Nick Noskowiak seems to be putting up some big numbers but, he just hasn't got any help.

This was a huge game as far as conference goes with Lafollette being 3-2 and Sun Prairie being 2-3. Lafollette came out with a great game plan just simply double teaming Noskowiak any time he touched the ball and even before, when Prairie was trying to in bounds the ball. This caused Noskowiak to really get tired out in the game and never get into his rhythm. Midway through the second quarter though Noskowiak got his outside shooting hitting three three point shots. The emergence of Noskowiak may of been because fellow junior 6'5 JT Ruffin came alive scoring and helping to bring the ball up the court. Ruffin should the ability to help bring the ball up the court and finish at the rim using his size. In the second half Noskowiak kept looking for his shot but, it wasn't falling and he appeared to get frustrated after he was fouled on a pair of shots and it wasn't called. With Noskowiak's jumper not falling, 6'5 freshmen Nate Verstegen came up big scoring at put backs off offensive rebounds. In the end Noskowiak's free throw shooting sealed the game.

The Sun Prairie zone was huge for Lafollette, they just couldn't get the ball inside and just settled for outside shots all game long. Prairie did a nice job of switching between their 1-3-1 zone and 2-3 zone to confuse Lafollette. Lafollette settled for the threes and they weren't falling. I think Lafollette hit maybe three, three point shots in the game. Lafollette came out with a lot of energy and 6'1 junior point guard Darol Thomas hit a three right away but, Thomas didn't hit another three the rest of the game and it wasn't for lack of shooting them on his part. I can really only think of two or three times where Lafollette actually took the ball inside and they did score each time they did it. There wasn't a lot of bright spots for Lafollette. Everyone that played looked to shoot so, they did score some points but, just wasn't enough team play and too much outside shooting.

Top Players
Nick Noskowiak 6'3 junior Sun Prairie- Looked very good from three point range and driving to the hoop but, struggled from mid range. Only had one short period of time where he was forcing things, otherwise he really played within the offense.

JT Ruffin 6'5 junior Sun Prairie- Pretty much said it all earlier. Did a nice job of taking the ball to the rim and scoring and also helping bring the ball up the court to take some of the pressure off Noskowiak.

Paris Vance 5'10 senior La Follette- Yea he's just a gunner coming off the bench but, did really provide scoring punch for a Lafollette team that needed it.

Darol Thomas 6'1 junior La Follette- Always liked his game and thought he should shoot more and he did that tonight but, his shot just wasn't falling tonight.

Box Score
SP 67- Noskowiak 27 Ruffin 18 Verstegen 9 Michael Marshese 6 Malik Robinson 3 Shane Waldon 2 Sam Kerr 2 Conner Stanek 0 Nate Oehrlein 0 Josh Hill 0 Noah Diaz 0 Holden Buie 0
La Follette- Vance 15 Thomas 14 Keahn Dunn 11 Maurice Ewing 7 Cortez McGree 5 JJ Collins 2 Kian O'Brien 0 Joseph Phillips 0 Jordan Carlson 0 Larry Haynes 0 Quinten Shere 0

I really think that this game may of been a turning point for Sun Prairie and they will look like the team everyone expected to see this year. Sun Prairie is missing two seniors from last years team and also two other returners from last years team, so we thought that they would be returning seven of their top nine and they actually only returned five. Lafollette will probably end up being a middle of the road team in the conference

NY2LA Tournament

Took in a great tournament on Saturday at Homestead high school. I love these type of tournaments because it allows me to see teams and players that I never would of seen before all in one day. Like most tournaments and games you get some great games and games that just don't live up to the hype.

Brookfield Academy 81 Milwaukee North 71
Ended up missing the first half of this game so it was hard to get into the flow of the game. I was there to see 5'9 junior David Hamilton and he didn't disappoint. I didn't keep score of this game but, knew Hamilton was closed to 40 points and I was right as he finished with 40. North played very frantic and took shots early and often while Academy was patient and move the ball and always seemed to get a wide open shot.

West Allis Central 68 Racine Horlick 47
One of the games that did disappoint as Central jumped out to an early 17-2 lead and never looked back. Horlick had a huge size advantage but, Central dominated the boards. Horlick could really use a solid point guard and some good outside shooting. Central point guard 6'0 junior Brandon Key had his way in this game and really controlled the tempo.

Top Scorers
WAC- Jerome Cummings 17 Key 13 Ron Turkvan 13
Horlick- Deonta Woods 11 Andre Barry 10 Ricky Neal Jr 6 Deantae Woods 6

Wisconsin Lutheran 68 Pewaukee 45
Wisco did what they always do. They pushed the tempo pressuring Pewaukee into turnovers and then turning those turnovers into easy buckets on the other side. Like last year it will always be a team effort for Lutheran and any one could step up on any given night. Pewaukee really struggled to set their offense. Pewaukee probably could of looked inside a lot more but, they seemed content trying to play Lutheran's game and tried to penetrate from the outside.

Top Scorers
WL- Keith Franklin 15 Milton Cummings 14 Jamare' Griffin 14 Anthony Carver 10
Pew- Ryan Stepanovich 13 Parker Brey 10 Eric Lutzen 6

Milwaukee Vincent 84 Brown Deer 68
Kind of a battle of contrasting styles as Vincent looked to run and it appeared BD would prefer to be a little more patient and use their size advantage. Brown Deers advantage was inside but, their guards struggled to get them the ball and they just couldn't hit anything from the outside. The other big difference in the game was that Vincent's guards attacked the rim while the BD guards settled for outside shots, leading to Vincent having a huge free throw shooting advantage.

Top Scorers
Vincent- Marcus White 27 Tyree Kendricks 17 Brandon Cooper 14 Malik Brown 11
BD- Devante Jackson 23 Lewrenzo Byers 18 Jerry Luckett 11

Homestead 62 Milwaukee Marquette 40
This was a big matchup of 6'7 juniors between Homestead's Jaylen Key and Marquette's Garrison Goode. The matchup started good but, Goode just couldn't find the touch and Key really outplayed him leading to Homesteads victory. Homestead really pounded it inside and Marquette never got things going.

Top Scorers
Homestead- Key 20 Jerrod Walton 15 Jack Popp 8
Marq- Ben Meinholz 12 Jake Matkovich 7 Garrison Goode 6

Neenah 56 Milwaukee Riverside 49
Another big matchup between big men with 6'10 Neenah junior Matt Heldt verse 6'10 Riverside senior Robert Harris. Harris was never a huge factor in the game and Neenah's patience and Heldt wore down Riverside who had the lead nearly the entire game. Neenah was patient throughout, while Riverside took the first shot they saw and played a lot of one on one.

Top Scorers
Neenah- Heldt 24 Trevor Entwisle 12 Adam Pohlman 8
Riverside- Nicholas Cobbins 14 N'Gai Dixon 12 James Batemon 11

Germantown 75 Whitefish Bay Dominican 29
This game was over before it began. Germantown has a ton of college talent and Dominican had 6'10 junior Diamond Stone. Stone was extremely frustrated, as every time he got the ball he was double teamed by two 6'7 players. Germantown senior 6'2 LaMonte' Bearden was head and shoulders above everyone on the court and 6'4 senior Jake Showalter just couldn't miss a three if he wanted to.

Top Scorers
GT- L Bearden 22 Showalter 14 Dearionte Hudson 8
Dominican- Stone 11 Austin Moutry 6 Jack Jelacic 4

Brookfield Central 61 Milwaukee Hamilton 57
Hamilton jumped out early behind the hot start from 6'9 senior Kevon Looney and BC spent the entire night trying to regain the lead and finally got it back late in the fourth and got the win in OT. In the second half Central doubled team Looney to force his team mates to do something and it looked like it was gonna be 5'10 junior Danya Kingsby that would do it but, he ran out of gas late. The patients and strong play of 6'2 senior Riley LaChance claimed the victory late.

Top Scorers
BC- LaChance 26 Elijah Goodman 14 Brad Newman 12
Hamilton- Looney 31 Kingsby 17 Delmarco Rucker 6

Top Players
David Hamilton 5'9 junior Milwaukee North- 40 points is all you have to say. Just a pure gunner with unlimited range.

Brandon Key 6'0 junior West Allis Central- Didn't score big but, really controlled this game with his point guard play. Just a very smooth player.

Jerod Cummings 6'1 junior West Allis Central- Did a great job of rebounding and battling the much bigger Horlick players. Was also able to score on the inside off the Key assists.

Milton Cummings 6'5 senior Wisconsin Lutheran- Was huge hitting three big three pointers in the game. Just has a really pretty smooth shot.

Devante Jackson 6'9 senior Brown Deer- Just a real nice player all around. Has a nice mid range jumper and showed a nice game on the inside.

Marcus White 6'5 senior Milwaukee Vincent- Does it all for Vincent. Runs the point at times, plays in the post, rebounds, and can hit the outside shot.

Tyree Kendricks 6'3 junior Milwaukee Vincent- Really gave Vincent a big scoring punch off the bench. A guy that could be a big scorer.

Brandon Cooper 6'6 senior Milwaukee Vincent- Did a nice job battling Jackson and company on the inside. Just a high energy player that always gives 100%.

Jaylen Key 6'7 junior Homestead- Showed a very nice post game and a wide array of moves in the post. Moves very well and can go out and hit the mid range shot.

Matt Heldt 6'10 junior Neenah- A real nice player and big man. Has a nice smooth hook shot on the inside and really keeps his composure and doesn't force things.

LaMonte' Bearden 6'3 senior Germantown- Just a super super quick lead guard. Handles the ball very well, controls the Germantown offense, and reads the passing lanes well on the defensive end.

Jake Showalter 6'4 senior Germantown- Sharpshooter that just doesn't miss. Seemed to take a lot of bad shots but, they were actually good shots as he doesn't miss.

Kevon Looney 6'9 senior Milwaukee Hamilton- Showed why he is one of the top players in the country. With his tremendous size could get his shot off at any time and the threes were falling.

Caleb Mortag 6'6 senior Brookfield Central- Didn't do a ton of scoring but, really showed some athletic ability blocking shots, throwing down dunks, and rebounding.

Riley LaChance 6'2 senior Brookfield Central- Smooth is the word. Never seems pressured and is always playing under control. When he shoots you just expect the shot to fall. Everything is just pretty about his game.

Was a very long day for me, so I did the best I could of my write up. It is now two days since the game so some things are hard to remember which led to my short write ups of each game. When there's eight games it's tough to go in depth on each game.

Madison Memorial over Madison East

Took in a very big game in the Big Eight as Memorial looked to climb back to the top after their loss to Middleton and East was looking to climb back in to some relevance after defeated Sun Prairie to open the season. As usual Madison East was undersized but, they do have some height in a pair of juniors 6'5 D'Angelo Millon and 6'4 Deron Cribbs. East really played tough even though they were much smaller then Memorial and led most of the game before they just seemed to wear out against the Memorial pressure. The East teams of recent have really reminded me of the Madison Edgewood teams, that maybe aren't the most talented team but, they are going to play the hardest and give 100% at all times. I really think highly of Edgewood's coach Zwittler and East's coach Matt Miota is starting to get into that class for me.

Early on East was knocking down their shots from the outside and they were running their offense very well. Memorial was able to stay in the game simply because they were taller and got second and third opportunities every time down the court.  6'7 senior Darral Willis had a field day early on scoring on the inside and hitting his free throws when he got fouled. East got the outside shooting from all their guards in 6'0 senior Dequan Seymore, 5'10 senior Martin Lackey, and 5'8 junior Austin Obodo. East led this game by five going into the fourth quarter but, Memorial got their uptempo gaming going with 5'10 junior Shareef Smith and 6'4 senior Tyler Lindquist and the two of them also hit their free throws late to put the game out of reach.

The future looks bright for East as they played only two seniors that played and I look for them to make some noise next year. It truly was a team effort for them as they had six players score between eight to 13 points. Obodo really was hot from down town early and his team mates looked to him. Both Seymore and Lackey are similar players. Both guys can knock down the three, take the ball to the rim hard where they can finish, and handle the ball really well. Millon really battled on the inside and did a nice jump of pulling Willis away from the rim shooting the 15 footers but, he seemed to fall in love with the jumper and would of like to see him attack the rim alittle more. Deang Deang is a very heady 6'2 sophomore who just seems like a smart player. Deang does a little bit of everything and is really the glue player that holds everything together. Runs the point, rebounds, passes, and scores when he's needed to. 6'3 junior De'Shawn Burks is regared as their top player and he had a pretty solid game. He seems to want to play on the perimeter but, I think he could really help his team out more by playing the post. Burks has a wide array of post moves and I think he could of gotten Willis in foul trouble with his head fakes down low. 5'10 junior Jordan Chester didn't even play in the game either as he was their top JV player a year ago and have seen in the box score that he has been their top scorer at times.

For Memorial they really looked into the post like the last game I saw them focusing on Willis and Lindquist. Also Smith really stepped up this game as it appears he has replaced 5'11 senior Reggie Roemer in the starting lineup. Smith had a quiet first half but, showed up in the second knocking down free throws and getting to the rim in transition. 6'3 junior Henry Houden also had a big second half scoring all 12 of his points after halftime and hitting some big late shots.

Top Players
Martin Lackey 5'10 senior East- Just a very strong lead guard, that used his strength to do what he wanted on the court. Knocked down some threes, got the ball to the rim, and doing a good job handling the Memorial pressure for 3/4 of the game.

De'Shawn Burks 6'3 junior East- Did a nice job battling the bigger defenders for Memorial and was able to score on the inside.

Darral Willis 6'7 senior Memorial- Had a dunk fest in the first half scoring in the paint. Really controlled the interior on both ends and had a ton of rebounds.

Tyler Lindquist 6'4 senior Memorial- Showed some nice post moves in the game and also was running the court well and getting some easy buckets.

Shareef Smith 5'10 junior Memorial- Seemed to be playing with  a lot more confidence this time around and looked to be a point guard rather then a scorer. Was great from the free throw line where he spent a lot of time and was able to score in transition and keep himself under control.

Box Score
East 65- Lackey 13 Millon 12 Burks 12 Seymore 10 Deang 8 Obodo 8 Cribbs 2 Tre'vone Irby 0

Memorial 75- Smith 20 Lindquist 18 Willis 16 Houden 12 Brett Tauber 5 Roemer 4 Daurice Fountain 0 Bryce Danielson 0 Koko Songolo 0

Memorial looks like they are ready to win their 11th straight conference title and East will probably beat some teams in the top half of the conference and will finish somewhere in the middle.

Necedah and Dubuque Senior get the Ws

Has been a little while since last week when I watched Necedah defeat Dodgeland and Dubuque Senior beat Sussex Hamilton. I've decided to just do a quick write up of each game.

Necedah 69 Dodgeland 42

Coming into this game I really didn't know anything about either team. it warm ups it was fairly obvious that this wasn't my typical game I attend and would be a bit lower level. Early on Dodgeland kept the game close but, as the game wore on it became more and more evident that Necedah was the far superior team. Necedah pressed the entire game and Dodgeland struggled to break the press a game long. Necedah really broke the game open when they out scored Dodgeland 22 to 4 in the third quarter. As the press wore Dodgeland down their defense got worse and worse and the gave up open three after open three.

Top Players
Jordan Murphy 5'10 junior Necedah- Struggled a bit early but, in the second half really got his shot going and was knocking down the threes. Did a nice job driving to the hoop as well when the shot was falling early.

Tripp Horbinski 5'7 senior Necedah- Didn't do a ton of scoring but, really did a nice job of pressuring the Dodgeland ball handlers and running the offense. Always seems to make the right decision in transition and finding the right team mate.

Colton Neis 5'11 junior Dodgeland- Was one of the few bright spots for Dodgeland as he was able to hit multiple mid range jumpers.

Top Scorers
Necedah
Murphy 19 Matt Brown 10 Isaiah Dutscheck 10
Dodgeland
Neis 10 Branden Kluge 9 David Cameron 8

Dubuque Senior 55 Sussex Hamilton 43

This game was really the story of the length of Dubuque just being too much for Hamilton to match. Dubuque started 6'3, 6'5, 6'7, 6'9, and 6'9 and Hamilton had two guys at 6'4 and one at 6'5. Hamilton had the top player in 6'4 senior Brady Ellingson but, he just had no help and just couldn't get his shot going at all. Ellingson took a ton of shots in this game and nothing was falling. As Ellingson continued to struggle he continued to force more and more shots. Shots that were in NBA range, threes with a hand in his face, and runners when he was double teamed. Ellingson's team mates seemed reluctant to take shots as I stated earlier and passed up open shots looking for Ellingson. For Senior they really showed off the defense and really focused on Ellingson, forcing him to get the ball five feet behind the three point line and having to make things happen from way outside. On the offensive end 6'7 senior Kyle Haber didn't do much early but, in the second half Haber got his mid range game going and was able to hit runners in the lane and late when Hamilton was fouling, Haber hit his free throws. Most of the game Senior went inside to their 6'9 big men senior Seth Bonifas and junior Luke McDonnell. They were able to score with ease or get fouled throughout. Hamilton made it interesting late with three pointers but, Dubuque hit their free throws and hung on for the win.

Top Players
Brady Ellingson 6'4 senior Hamilton- Looked real smooth but, just couldn't get his shot to fall. Showed some good ball handling skills.

Kyle Haber 6'7 senior Dubuque- Did a great job running the point. Showed a very nice mid range game from 15 feet and in and hit the big free throws late in the game.

Luke McDonnell 6'9 junior Dubuque- Showed a real nice touch around the rim and also did a great job of rebounding as well.

Top Scorers
Hamilton
Ellingson 19 Mitch Gesvain 9
Dubuque
Haber 22 McDonnell 14 Bonifas 8

May or may not be going to a game tomorrow night and then will be going to a tournament this weekend.

Middleton upsets Madison Memorial

I have watched Madison Memorial more then any other high school in the past ten years or so and it is very evident that this is not the Madison Memorial of old and this game may look like an upset right now, come the end of the year this may not be an upset. Stating that is really not a knock on this Memorial team that really has a ton of talent but, the fact that the teams in the past have been so good. My comments could be all for not though if these team ends up winning another conference title like last years team which I also thought was not quite up to par with teams of past.

Like the teams of old this Memorial team looks to run and push the tempo but, I'm not sure that is this teams best bet to win. Memorial has good overall team size but, doesn't have the quickness to apply the pressure for an entire game. I would like see them really pound the ball inside to their senior big man 6'7 Darral Willis and 6'4 Tyler Lindquist. They did a nice job of going to Willis at times but, he was limited by foul trouble and had some poor shot selections. Willis needs to do a better job of passing out of the post and just playing a little smarter on defense and offense. Lindquist didn't really look to go down in the low post much and I really think that would benefit him very well.

I don't like to criticize players directly so I'll just leave it at Memorial took a lot and I mean a lot of very bad shots and probably air balled about half a dozen shots. If they don't have the shooters they don't have the shooters but, not taking those bad shots may have allowed Memorial to win this game. I believe in the game Memorial only hit two three point shots and that has been a weakness for Memorial for a quite a few years and in the past they have been able to over come that with athleticism and rebounding and this team may be able to do the same thing in time. Have to give props to 5'11 senior Reggie Roemer who has really become a leader of this time. At this time last year he couldn't even get off the bench and as the year went on he moved into the rotation and then starting by being a scrappy hard nosed player and is now the floor general of this team and seems to be playing with a lot of confidence.

Middleton was pretty typical of Middleton teams of the past five years. Play a lot of guys, shoot the three, and really play hard nosed hustling basketball. 6'5 senior Derek Rongstad was probably the best player on the court but, he hardly had to do it alone. Seven different players made baskets and it is very hard to tell who the starters are watching the game because everyone is so even and there is no drop off on the bench. Middleton did struggle with Memorial's pressure defense at times but, Rongstad would always come back and take control bringing the ball up the court and settle Middleton down. When Willis for Memorial got in foul trouble Middleton was able to take advantage grabbing offensive rebounds and taking the ball strong to the hoop. I wish I had more to say about Middleton because they won the game but, Memorial has all the hype and the talent. It's also a credit to Middleton because they don't have the standout outside of Rongstad that stands out and takes all the credit.

Top Players
Darral Willis (was Darralyn last year?) 6'7 senior Memorial- Has a pretty nice game with his back to the basket. Is still a little raw and doesn't have the softest touch. With his length showed he could get his shot of at anytime and he is going to affect the game with his rebounding and defense.

Henry Houden 6'4 junior Memorial- Didn't know a thing about this kid and don't recall him since he played JV last year I'm assuming but, he really stuck out to me. Didn't have a great game but, is really athletic and moves without the ball. Also plays some pretty good defense.

Derek Rongstad 6'5 senior Middleton- Just a very good player that will push for conference player of the year in the Big Eight. Shoots the three, rebounds, runs the point, and can get his shot any time he wants.

Demond Hill 6'2 senior Middleton- Watching warmups thought Hill would be a high energy guy but, was really a calming influence and was a great spot up shooter and was able to guard anyone on the court.

Box Score
Memorial 50- Willis 15 Lindquist 10 Roemer 7 Shareef Smith 7 Houden 6 Bryce Danielson 5 Daurice Fountain 0 Brett Tauber 0
Middleton 54- Rongstad 16 Hill 10 Max Oelerich 8 Luke Schafer 8 Chris Little 5 Andrew Garner 4 CJ Fermanich 2 Derek Rogeberg 1 Brett Joers 0 Nick Revord 0

This game could be a peak into the future with Memorial maybe falling back to the back and Middleton possibly showing they may be one of the top contenders. On the other side Memorial will turn things around and win another conference title and Middleton will fall back to reality and be a .500 team in conference. It will probably be somewhere in between with Memorial challenging for a conference title and Middleton will probably be right with them.

Division Five Preseason Rankings

Finally have gotten to the smallest division. Another division where I will count on Mark Miller.

1. NEW Lutheran- Bring back a pair of starters from their state runner up team in seniors 6'7 Nathan Toenjes and 6'3 Dakota Zinser both double digit scorers. Also bring back most of their bench as well.

2. Randolph- Defending state champs have a new coach but, bring back 5'7 junior Duke Vander Galien who should have a break out year with more freedom in the offense and 6'3 senior Kyle Roberts.

3. Sheboygan Lutheran- Still have two starters from their state championship team two years ago in 5'9 senior Tyler Zastrow and 6'0 junior Jacob Jurss.

4. Fall River- Have been the dominate team in the Trailways South and bring back four starters.

5. Thorp- Picked to win the always tough Cloverbelt West and have four starters back.

6. Black Hawk- Only lost two games a year ago and have their top three scorers back.

7. Cassville- Won 22 games a year ago and have back five of their top six players.

8. Columbus Catholic- Four starters back and they won 18 games a year ago.

9. Barneveld- Have a great tradition and only lost one starter from last years team.

10. Almond-Bancroft- Won 20 games a year ago and are led by 6'2 senior Ethan Yonke who averages nearly 20 points a game.

11. Central Wisconsin Christian- Have gotten to the point where they regularly challenge Randolph in conference and when you get to that point it really means something.

12. Catholic Central- Have their top five scorers back.

13. Bangor- Four starters back, two of which were first team all conference in 6'0 senior Andrew Lockington and 6'5 junior Canon O'Heron.

14. North Crawford- Have a strong tradition and bring back three starters.

15. Assumption- A pair of double digit scorers back and they have a pretty good tradition as well.

There is my D5. Not much to say about it at all. I only saw two of these teams play last year and that was the top two teams.

Division Four Preseason Rankings

Well I'm getting a little behind on my preseason rankings since the first week of the season is already past but, I will try to catch up on the final two small divisions and may need some help from my Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook. The small schools don't have the big name players typically and therefore don't draw my attention or the majority of peoples attentions. So here are my D4 rankings, with a lot of help from Mark Miller. As the usual there is a lot of private schools here.

1. Dominican- 6'9 junior Diamond Stone is one of the top players in the country let a lone the top player in D4. Probably no one in D4 that can stop him.

2. Blair Taylor- Bring back everyone from last years team. Headlined by 6'1 junior Brett Ladsten and 6'4 senior Dalton Soto. Had the talent last year and couldn't put it together.

3. Pacelli- Were talked up a lot last year and had a good year but, this year should be better with five starters returning, three of which are 6'4 or taller.

4. Brookfield Academy- Bring back three starters including 22 points a game player in 6'3 senior Sean Clarey who will be playing D2 college next year.

5. Racine St. Catherines- Ultra strong tradition for St. Cats and 6'6 junior Kelly Thomas should make them a top team in D4.

6. Eau Claire Regis- 6'5 junior Billy Wampler should have a huge year.

7. Auburndale- State team a year ago and bring back their second leading scorer in 6'1 senior Blake Anderson, as well as a pair of other starters.

8. Mineral Point- Four starters back and Mark Miller has them ranked in the top five.

9. Cuba City- Very strong tradition and would be surprised to see them not in the top 15.

10.  Shiocton- Another Mark Miller pick here. Have three starters back from a 21 win team.

11. Lourdes Academy- Return two double digit scorers and they are picked to beat Randolph in conference.

12. Marathon- Honestly just a bit of a hunch here and have been very good the last few years.

13. Cameron- Seem to always have a great record the last few years.

14. Wild Rose- Another team that always seemed to find themselves ranked the last few years.

15. Grantsburg- Have had a strong tradition the last 10 years or so and should continue.

I'll be honest with my picks here after the top six, it was pretty much a crap shoot. The other obvious thing in D4 is, when in doubt go with the privates. Privates are the schools that can reload year and year out, while public schools depend on a talented class here and there.

Marshall over Poynette

Took in my first game of the year last night in Poynette. Being that is early in the year there aren't a lot of big games going on until the holidays start so, I thought I would take in a game that was fairly close to me. Coming into the game I didn't know a whole lot about the two teams other then Poynette had some juniors that seemed to put up good scoring numbers and Marshall has 6'2 senior Cam Ward who is one of the best shooters in the state and will be going to Vermont next year on scholarship. Yes I have both teams in my D3 preseason rankings but, didn't see Marshall play last year and haven't seen Poynette play in about eight years.

Both teams came out in zone defenses. One I loved and one I didn't. Marshall is an undersized team and game out in a 2-3 zone which I've never been a fan of but, if I recall at state two years ago they played zone and they are a little undersize so zone probably does make sense. Poynette came out in a triangle and two which I love. I always love the strange different defenses that you don't see on a regular bases, such as a triangle and two or box and one. One thing I didn't like was Poynette had their top scorer in 6'3 junior Tanner Bruchs matched up man to man with Ward. Bruchs picked up a foul the first time down the court and they didn't switch him off Ward, which led to Bruchs picking up his second foul two minutes into the game and spending the rest of the first quarter on the bench and really hurting Poynette on the offensive end. Early on Ward was able to get things going particularly once Bruchs was out of the game as it was fairly evident that Poynette didn't have anyone quick enough to stick with Ward. On the other side Poynette was able to get the ball to the middle of the zone but, too many times they settled for the outside shot and the outside shot was not falling. Poynette was able to keep the game close because they dominated the offensive glass and got second and third shots numerous times. Bruchs did get back into the game and hit four three point shots in the second to help Poynette out and fellow junior 6'3 Riley Lytle did show some moderate success getting the ball to the middle of the Marshall zone and taking the ball to the hoop.

Cam Ward didn't have a great night but, had a good night (had 25 points). Ward was forcing things at times and didn't shoot great and got a large amount of his points from the free throw line. 6'1 senior Ryan Link stepped up big though to help Ward out as he hit jumper after jumper and added in three, three point shots. Poynette continued their poor shooting and poor shot selection and eventually those long rebounds turned into fast break points for Marshall as they scored 30 points in the fourth to pull away.

Box Score (starters in italics)
Poynette 56- Bruchs 17 Lytle 16 Tyler Klink 8 Ben Lattimer 6 Jacob Krumberger 3 Ethan Lurquin 2 Tower Manning 2 Bradley Smith 2 Brennan Pederson 0 Kevin Bennett 0 Scott Lenius 0 Meko Washington 0 Wesley Gorman 0 Jacob Reddeman 0
Marshall 77- Ward 25 R Link 20 Austin Sinden 15 Sam Schwenn 4 Bryce Riege 4 Adam Link 3 Dylan Gumz 2 Austin Hayes 2 Adam Wehking 2 Brandon Grob 0 Alec Gillett 0 Stevie Klock 0 Gavin Peck 0 Curtis Olson 0 Justin Eggers 0 Tyler Kurt 0

Top Players
Tanner Bruchs 6'3 junior Poynette- When he was in did a nice job of knocking down the spot up three pointers.

Riley Lytle 6'3 junior Poynette- Did a little bit of everything for the team. Ran the point at times, rebounded, and was the one player that was able to get inside the zone defense and get to the rim.

Cam Ward 6'2 senior Marshall- Easily the best player on the court and could get past his defender any time he wanted. Struggled at times but, was really forcing it at times.

Ryan Link 6'1 senior Marshall- Probably shot at least 75%, just didn't seem to miss. Everything was falling for him that he threw up. Just a very soft shooting touch.

Austin Sinden 6'4 senior Marshall- Nothing super impressive about him in this game, just always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

I believe that Poynette could be a good team if they just hit the outside shots and took some better shots. They have nice overall team size and have a really nice core. On the other side Marshall will probably lean on Ward a lot and they really need to rebound better. If this team is making their threes though they could go far and possibly beat some very good teams.

Division Three Preseason Rankings

In the past D3 has always had the most obvious top 10 teams or so but, this year seems to be very different as many of the top teams were hit hard by graduation and their were some very talented senior  classes last year.

1. Lodi- State runner ups a year ago bring back a pair of talented seniors in 6'4 Jordan Shea and 6'5 John Hatch.

2. Roncalli- Have a very strong tradition and also seem to be near the top of the rankings year in and year out. Bring back four of five starters from last year.

3. Marshall- 6'1 senior Cam Ward is back for his senior year and should be able to carry his team at times.

4. Wrightstown- Bring back three starters from last years 20 win team and have lots of size and height.

5. Brown Deer- Always have a ton of talent and should be battle tested coming out of a tough conference.

6. Peshtigo- Always have a very good record but, benefit from playing small schools in conference. Bring back four starters from a 21 win team a year ago.

7. Kettle Moraine Lutheran- Have four core players from last years team back.

8. Lacrosse Aquinas- State champs lost a lot but, bring back 6'8 senior Parker Weber along with most of their bench.

9. East Troy- State team a year ago and bring back five of their top eight players from a year ago.

10. Poynette- Should have a huge years from a pair of juniors in 6'2 Tanner Bruchs and 6'3 Scott Lenius.

11. Waupun- A Mark Miller pick but, they do have 6'3 junior Mason Domask back who averaged nearly 20 a game last year.

12. Elk Mound- This was a Mark Miller pick.

13. Little Chute- State team a year ago and will hopefully be able to continue the success and 5'10 senior DJ Devalk should have a huge year.

14. Valders- Have three starters back and they will be battle tested coming out of the tough Olympian conference.

15. Nekoosa- Gotta give a team from the South Central a little praise.

As you can see by my post there was a lot of guessing that was done on the rankings so these will probably change quite a bit as the year goes on. Watching a big D3 matchup tomorrow as I take in Marshall vs Poynette.

Division Two Preseason Rankings

The regular season has actually already started so, I obviously need to get my preseason rankings finished here. My rankings will not take into account any games that have been played or lost this year and hopefully my rankings will be done by the end of this weekend, so I will only be missing a week of games and a lot of teams won't have even played yet anyway. Here are my D2 rankings.

1. Seymour- Have a pair of scholarship players leading the way with 6'6 Marquette recruit, senior Sandy Cohen and 6'4 senior Dakota Oskey.

2. Rice Lake- May very well have the top player in all of D2 in the 6'9 junior Henry Ellenson.

3. West De Pere- Had a tremendous record a year ago and bring back two big time players in 6'6 senior Chandler Diekvoss and 6'8 junior Cody Schwartz.

4. Whitefish Bay- Had some very big wins a year ago including beating a very good Little Chute team, who seemed unbeatable at the time and bring back three starters including their leading scorer 6'6 senior Joe Sherburne.

5. Milwaukee Washington- Had a ton of athletes and talent on this team a year ago and have plenty coming back. Had maybe too much talent a year ago as it seemed at times guys weren't able to get in the flow of the game because their was always someone waiting in the wings if they made a mistake.

6. Wisconsin Lutheran- Similar to Washington in that they had a ton of talent. Played ten players evenly last year so those bench players saw a lot of time and experience a year ago.

7. Milwaukee Pius- Have top two scores back in 6'7 junior Levi Bradley and 6'1 senior Donovan Jackson.

8. La Crosse Central- Really challenged Onalaska and Aquinas a year ago for the conference title and both those teams were extremely good.

9. Stoughton- State team a year ago and they bring back their top player in 6'8 junior Nick McGlyn.

10. New Berlin Eisenhower- Always seem to rebuild with this team and are led by big time scorer 6'1 senior Reed Timmer.

11. Pewaukee- The last few years they always seem to have one of the best records in the state, so figured this year would be no different.

12. Mount Horeb- Really only because Mark Miller had them in his top 10.

13. Holmen- Bring back all five starters that all averaged between seven and 11 points.

14. Plymouth- Again a Mark Miller pick.

15. Madison Edgewood- Just a hunch. Coach Zwittler always gets the most out of his teams.

As you can tell by my rankings after the top nine I was a little clueless. D2 is always so tough and the ranked teams are constantly changing. So many of these teams are playing bigger schools during the year which really hurts their overall record. Doing these rankings has really gotten me excited for the year and I can't hardly wait.

Division One Preseason Rankings

Well I'm finally back to posting on my blog as another year of high school basketball is upon us. Hopefully there are a few readers left (if I ever had any) or I can earn some new readers. My life has seemed to have gotten to busy during the summer months with being married now so my posting has gone down to just being done during the winter months and only about high school basketball in Wisconsin. This may or may not be my last year of blogging and attending so many high school games, as I turn 30th this January. I always told myself that I would be done with the high school basketball thing when I turned 30. As I don't have a child yet this may not be the case, we will just see how this season goes and if I still enjoy it I will probably continue to go to games and right about it, maybe not as much as I have in the past but, at least a little bit.

Enough about myself and on to the point of this post, My Preseason Division One Rankings. Obviously my rankings mean exactly zero but, are simply just for fun and compare my thoughts to the "experts". Yes I may never see some of these teams play or have ever seen them play but, hey neither do the coaches that do the rankings. I can go by who they've played and beaten what their history says, just like the coaches. Anyway here are my rankings.

1. Germantown- Probably everyone has G'Town as #1 as they returned four starters from their state championship team of a year ago, three of which have earned D1 scholarships and a fourth that earned a D2 scholarship.

2. Brookfield Central- Gave Germantown a good game last year and pushed Milwaukee King to the limit in the game to get to state. Have lots of overall size and are led by Vanderbilt recruit 6'2 senior Riley LaChance.

3. Oshkosh North- Bring back all four starters from their state final four team from a year ago and are headlined by a pair of three year starters in 6'6 senior Cooper Radtke and 5'10 Nathan Neveau.

4. Stevens Point- Won 22 games a year ago and bring back their top three scores, headlined by 20 point a game man in 6'2 sophomore Trevor Anderson.

5. Sun Prairie- Have an extremely talented junior class that is led by 6'2 Marquette recruit Nick Noskowiak.

6. Milwaukee King- Every year King  brings a team that is capable of making it to state and have one of the top coaches in the state. Add in the transfer of 6'2 point guard, junior Joe Biyoti and this is a very tough team.

7. Racine Case- Another team that won 22 games last year and bring back four of those starters.

8. De Pere- Have really gotten a strong tradition going now, also have good size, and are led by 6'3 junior Breven Pretzl.

9. Madison Memorial- Team has size and lots of talent but, just question their outside shooting and lack that go to guy that can go out and get 20 points on any given night despite what the rest of the team is doing.

10. Milwaukee Hamilton- Lost David Burrell from last years great team but, still have one of the most highly recruited players from the state ever in 6'8 senior Kevon Looney who just committed to UCLA.

11. Neenah- Bring back three starters and 6'10 D1 recruit junior Matt Heldt.

12. Milwaukee Vincent- 6'6 senior Marcus White and 6'0 junior Malik Brown who form a very nice one two punch.

13. Mukwonago- State runner ups a year ago really opened peoples eyes and though they lost a lot seemed to have a ton of depth.

14. Sussex Hamilton- Had a tremendous record a year ago. Lost four starters but, that one starter back is 6'4 Iowa recruit senior Brady Ellingson.

15. Homestead- The last few years I've thought Homestead would be pretty good and they never seem to live up to the hype. This year they still have a lot of height and maybe this year they will meet expectations.

There are my beginning rankings to start year. I will try to update the rankings weekly, if there is a full week of games with the holidays right around the corner.

2013-2014 Thoughs

The year has ended and this could very well be my final post until next season starts up. I have a lot of thoughts about next year and this will probably be my last chance to put them in writing with warm weather just around the corner

Division One
Of any division this one seems to have the most coming back on top anyway. Germantown is the defending champion and had only one senior that really played even though that senior was Mr. Basketball and scored 20 points a game. The top player is Kevon Looney who teams with David Burrell on Milwaukee Hamilton to give them the top post tandem and should be right there with Germantonw. Brookfield Central brings back their top two scorers and would be surprised to see them come out on top. A final four team this year, Oshkosh North brings back all five starters and then theres Sun Prairie, who loses only two guys in their rotation and have a very good sophomore class and they pushed Iowa champ Iowa City West to the limit. Those are my top five teams but, I like Madison Memorial, with their size coming back and strong tradition and lost only two guys in their top 10. Of course you can never count out the Milwaukee schools in King and Vincent, De Pere, has a lot coming back, and theres always they top teams from the Fox Valley.

Division Two
Traditionally this division is very up and down and is up for grabs throughout the year but, next year could be different. Seymour has the top two players coming back in Dakota Oskey and Sandy Cohen. Rice Lake may finally have a chance to make state now that Matt Thomas has graduated. I really like the teams at Wisconsin Lutheran and Milwaukee Washington who just have so much talented and really don't have a go to player that their losing. A team I could see being a sleeper is Wauwautosa West, who really had a bad season but, when I saw them play I was impressed and thought they were much better then their record showed. A team I have kind of forgotten is Whitefish Bay, who was the only team that beat Little Chute during the regular season and have a very deep junior class.

Division Three
I really think this division is going to be hit hard by graduation. All the top teams were senior led. I could see Lodi coming back with Jordan Shea back and Jacob Hatch, who is extremely athletic and I really like him. Also Marshall has their big time scorer Cam Ward who could carry them far. Roncalli and Brillion will both probably be teams to watch. Other then that I really don't know who will be back at the top. Maybe a Brown Deer or possibly Aquinas to repeat.

Division Four
Basically it begins and ends with Dominican. Diamond Stone is a 6'9 beast and there is no one in D4 to match him. I like a return of Aburndale as they lose only two guys but, they were their leading scorer and size in the inside. Otherwise the usual with the strong tradition will probably be around. Cuba City, Laconia, and Brookfield Academy will be teams to record with and probably another private or two.

Division Five
This division is probably the most up for grabs there is. Randolph is the easy choice but, really only have Duke Vander Galien back unless they have someone coming up the ranks. GB NEW Lutheran has 6'7 Nathan Toenjes coming back but, not much else. Other then these two really isn't a clear favorite. In D5 more then any you can typically go with tradition. D5 doesn't get the stars of the bigger schools and usually coaching is the difference between good and bad teams, so usually you can go with the typical top teams.

There are just a few of my early thoughts for next year as the season has just recently end. Of course most of my thoughts are on the teams that actually made state and I probably haven't seen many of the top teams in the smaller divisions outside of the teams that actually made state. This years senior class was truly amazing and I just don't see next year living up to this season.

State Recap

Well now that state has been over a week ago and the girls have already started I figured I would do a quick write up of the summary of each division and my "All Tournament Team" (top five players) of each division and just some of my thoughts.

Division Five
Once again like always this division was Randoph's too lose. Randolph has a tough semi-final game against Elmwood and if not for some foul trouble Elmwood may of been able to knock Randolph off. With Randolph really struggling early one sophomore point guard Duke Vander Galien really took over and controlled the game and was able to get to the rim and score and was always pushing the tempo. On the other side Drummond was back and it was nice to see them play well after basically getting embarrassed last year and pushed Green Bay NEW Lutheran too the limit before bowing out in overtime. Travis Voigt for GBNL really caught my attention in this one I always love the true point guards and Voigt is exactly that. He can score but, looks for his team mates first it seems. The championship game was a great match up of point guards with Voigt and Vander Galien going head to head. Honestly they kind of cancelled each other out but, it was the interior play particularly for Aaron Retzlaff who used an array of moves to score in the paint. Have to say it was very different seeing Randolph push the tempo when they have been so slow paced in the past.

All Tournament
Aaron Retzlaff 6'4 senior Randolph- Just was a beast in the paint on the offensive end. Wasn't the biggest player but, used a variety of skills to score around and the rim and also did all the little things rebounding and finding open team mates cutting to the hoop. Ran the court well as well which allowed him to finish with a nice dunk.
Ben Best 6'6 senior Drummond- Gives a 100% at all times and grabs every rebound. Can see why he is an automatic double double every time he is on the court.
Travis Voigt 5'8 senior GBNL- I've pretty much said it already above. Ultimate point guard in being a pass first leader but, can also score as well.
Duke Vander Galien 5'7 sophomore Randolph- Really controlled the tempo in both games they played and was the reason that Randolph is playing different then they have in the past.
Logan Wolf 6'2 senior Elmwood- Battled foul trouble throughout the entire game but, still really showed the ability to shoot the ball from the outside and didn't need a lot of room.

Division Four
As expected it was Whitefish Bay Dominican that came out on top but, it wasn't nearly as easy as the majority of people thought it would be. Dominican was in a battle with both Cuba City and Aburndale but, in the end Duane Wilson and Diamond Stone were just too much for anyone else at state. I don't remember much about the first game but, Aburndale was able to defeat Amherst fairly easily as Amherst just wasn't able to get anything to fall. Aburndale really worked the high post to low post game using their size advantage. Cuba City didn't back down one bit and actually had a much better showing this year against Dominican then last year. Dominican really struggled to make anything early but, in the second half Wilson took over and he wasn't going to be denied. Cuba City bombed the threes but, just didn't hit enough to win this one. In the championship game Aburndale played close tell Wilson went on one of his runs and he and Stone had some dunks and they were able to run away. Wilson and Stone had the highlights but, it was Aurndale's Austin Hawkins that was the top player in the game as he had 31 points and he just couldn't miss in either state game and Dominican had no one to guard him even when the 6'9 Stone was on him.

All Tournament
Austin Hawkins 6'4 senior Aburndale- Just couldn't miss in either game and I thought he was the most impressive player in the division. Showed the ability to hit the deep jumper as well as get in the post as score. Will be a really good division three player.
Duane Wilson 6'2 senior Dominican- Has got to be the quickest player in the state when the ball is in his hands. Showed the full arsenal this weekend. Hit the deep deep threes, showed the floater in the land, mid range jumper, the ball handling, and of course the power dunks.
Diamond Stone 6'9 sophomore Dominican- Looked awkward at times but, have to remember that he is only a sophomore and a big man. Showed some very nice moves with his back to the basket. Blocked a ton of shots and had a ton of rebounds.
Caleb Glennon 6'1 senior Amherst- His team didn't have a great game but, Glennon played extremely hard. Moves very well without the ball and showed the ability to cut and get to the rim and score.
Jake Jelacic 6'6 junior Dominican- Probably catch a little flack for not having a Cuba City guy but, I really liked how Jelacic did all the little things for Dominican. Played great defense and was the teams leading rebounder  I believe. (At least it seemed)

Division Three
This was the most hyped up division and they really lived up to it. Game one saw a ton of talent with Little Chute and Lacrosse Aquinas. Both teams had the size and talent. I thought the bigs of Little Chute would have their way but, the less heralded big man of Aquinas really stuck with them. The biggest difference in this game was Bronson Koenig who was the best player on the court and really showed that he makes his team mates better and that was probably why they won. In game two Lodi came out firing to avenge their embarrassing performance last year and nearly ran East Troy out of the gym but, East Troy fought back and made this one close late before Lodi clinched it with free throws. Lodi did a great job of limiting the 6'9 Prahl twins but, basically collapsing on them and triple teaming them anytime that they touched the ball. Throughout the Lodi D in with the struggles of Nate Dodge, makes them extremely hard. In the title game Aquinas had too much fire power and if not for some hot shooting from Kris Seffrood this game would of been over very early.

All Tournament
Bronson Koenig 6'3 senior Aquinas- He is the perfect point guard.Might be the best scorer in the state but, seems to get as much enjoyment watching his team mates score as he does scoring himself. Just makes his team so much better.
Parker Weber 6'7 junior Aquinas- Really benefits from playing with Koenig but, really showed me something against Little Chute scoring over defenders that were his size and staying with the much more athletic Little Chute big men.
Turner Botz 6'6 senior Little Chute- Struggled in the first half but, played twice as hard in the second half and didn't settle just sitting outside and cut to the hoop to score and grabbed offensive rebounds.
Kenneth Lowe 6'7 senior Little Chute- Showed his wide array of post moves in the game and also showed that he was an extremely athletic big man and can score in a wide variety of ways.
Jordan Shea 6'4 junior Lodi- Thought about picking team mate Seffrood but, Shea did such a great job of guarding Nate Dodge against East Troy and did a solid job on Koenig in the championship. Oh yea was Lodi's top scorer as well.

Division Two

This division always seems too be the least exciting and also the most unpredictable. Onalaska had a lot of hype and had the top player in Matt Thomas but, Pulaski really impressed me with the ability so slow things down and always seemed to be under control playing their game. Pulaski did a nice job of limiting Matt Thomas and company by switching between a man to man to a zone throughout the game. Yea Thomas got his but, no one else looked good. In the other game Wisconsin Lutheran just pressed and pressured Stoughton and ran them out of the gym very very quickly. Just seemed like Lutheran was playing with seven guys on the court as every pass Stoughton through was picked off. In the second game Pulaski still played their slow down game and just seemed unaffected by the Lutheran pressure. Lutheran on the other side looked very uncomfortable in the half court setting and in particular against the Pulaski zone. Patients out lasted the speed in the end.

All Tournament
Cody Wichmann 6'4 senior Pulaski- Was the teams leading scorer throughout and also helped control the tempo and was their number two ball handler.
Deiondre Cunningham 6'0 senior Lutheran- Was one of the few Lutheran players that was actually able to hit the three point shot. Whenever Lutheran needed a big shot or was trying to get back in the game against Pulaski, Cunningham was the guy that would hit the shot.
Jordan Stiede 5'10 senior Pulaski- Wasn't a huge scorer but, did hit the open three when it was given. What he did do was control the overall team tempo and did a great great job of running the point against Lutheran's pressure and didn't turn the ball over.
Matt Thomas 6'4 senior Onalaska- Was his usual self scoring at will and moving without the ball. I also think he may of reached double digit rebounds as well.
Nick McGlynn 6'7 sophomore Stoughton- Was the one Stoughton player that had a very good game. He dominated the glass on both sides and was able to score in the paint.

Division One

The first game was a entertaining up and down game. Germantown wanted to run and Oshkosh North ran right with them. Unfortunately for North, Germantown just had a lot more guns. North couldn't go inside to their big man Cooper Radtke with the size of Germantown inside so they had to rely on their outside play and they just didn't have enough. Game two was the biggest shocker of state as Mukwonago defeated Milwaukee King, when King tried to press Mukwonago and speed up the game they were unable to and Mukwonago was just too big and strong on the inside. If you have seen Mukwonago they really looked like men playing against boys. In the championship though it was just too much Germantown and their entire team talent and size was too much.

All Tournament
Dominic Cizauskas 6'1 junior Mukwonago- Just have to say wow. This kid is huge. Looks like a nfl middle linebacker but, may of been the most athletic player at state. Handles the ball, rebounds, shots, and can really jump.
Luke Fisher 7'0 senior Germantown- Just solid guy that will always have a good game. Rebounds, blocks shots, and of course scores at will.
Nathan Neveau 5'11 junior Oshkosh North- Really had a smooth game and looked like he loved playing the uptempo game. Has a very nice mid range jump shot.
Jake Showalter 6'3 junior Germantown- This kid just loves shooting at state and he really bombs away from the outside. If he's open shot is going to go down.
Nate Tanguay 6'4 senior Mukwonago- Does alittle bit of everything. Scores in the post, rebounds, shoots the three, and helped bring the ball up the court against the pressure defenses.

I would say that it was a so so state tournament this year and I'm already looking towards next year to pick who the top teams will be and who will be able to make the trip back to Madison and repeat. Germantown maybe a three peat? Well I will leave that for my next post.

State Predictions

Well tomorrow is the start of the final four state tournament so I figured that I would make my predictions now that we finally know the teams that are at state. Even though I will only be watching the state games on TV it still feels like Christmas Eve to me and this years tournament is full of stars which is great to see.

Division Five

Green Bay NEW Lutheran over Drummond
Randolph over Elmwood

Green Bay NEW Lutheran over Randolph

Even though Drummond battled GBNL very tough during the regular season I still think that Lutheran wins again here and facing a much tougher regular season. I know nothing about Elmwood but, Randolph is Randolph and they are of course battle tested and should be able to beat Elmwood. In the final I have NEW Lutheran because this Randolph team just isn't the teams of old and they don't have a go to scorer and can't get behind.

Division Four

Dominican over Cuba City
Aburndale over Amherst

Dominican over Aburndale

I really don't see anyone beating Dominican here. They have way too much talent for anyone else in the field and no one has the size to stay with Diamond Stone.  Aburndale should get to the title game being that they have been battled tested, have the coach, and just looking at Amherst roster, schedule, and stats see Aburndale winning.

Division Three

Little Chute over Aquinas
East Troy over Lodi

Little Chute over East Troy

This is easily the most anticipated division with the most high level individual players. I'm taking Little Chute over Aquinas because of the size and athleticism of Kenneth Lowe and Turner Botz on the inside and outside. Bronson Koenig will have the huge game but, it'll be Little Chute with the W. On the other side I just don't see Lodi matching up with the size and talent of East Troy but, I could be wrong as Lodi beat East Troy last year to go to state. In the final Little Chute should win going a way but, should be a great battle of big men.

Division Two

Onalaska over Pulaski
Wisconsin Lutheran over Stoughton

Wisconsin Lutheran over Onalaska

Should be the Matt Thomas show which should be enough to lift Onalaska over Pulaski but, I'm interested to see Cody Wichman play who I have never seen play. In the other game Wisco should roll using their depth and speed to run away. Thomas won't have enough help around him in the final and Wisco will get the W but, it was a very tough pick for me.

Division One

Germantown over Oshkosh North

Milwaukee King over Mukwonago

Germantown over Milwaukee King

Last year North didn't have the guards to battle King and this year they won't have the bigs to battle Gtown. Just like North last year Muk doesn't have the guards to handle King. In a rematch of last years final Germantown should defeat King and once again the size will be the difference.

Really should be a great year once again with some tremendous individual talents at state. There are at last 11 D1 college athletes playing and an additional handful that could play at that level as well. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep tonight.

Wisconsin Dells Season Ends

It has been a little while since I have been able to post but, I have been busy going to games and just haven't had the chance. This past weekend the final four state teams were set and unfortunately for the Wisconsin Dells Chiefs they weren't one of them. I have heard how good this senior class was and that they would win state for the past six years since they were in 7th grade. It was kind of a yea right until I saw these kids playing as sophomores and even more when they were juniors. All year Dells was one of the top teams in the state in D3 and spent much of the year ranked #1. End of the year the Dell just seemed to be complacent and didn't seem like the team I saw early on. All year they had shared the ball and showed some great ball movement but, since the second half of the East Troy game (at least from what I saw) there was just too much one on one play and the ball seemed to stick at times. This was very evident in the Chiefs final two games of the year.

On Thursday the Chiefs defeated Prairie du Chien but, they game wasn't pretty to say the least. Early on Dells seemed a little slow in getting out to the PDC three point shooters and the PDC shooters were knocking down the three point shot. Prairie got physical with the Dells lone big man Shane Wimann and Wimann didn't seem to like the physical play which caused him to miss some bunnies and force a few too many shots. The forcing a shots was partially because the only players really looking for their shot was Wimann and fellow star MJ Delmore. Prairie got the lead to 11 at one point and if not for a tremendous three point barrage by Delmore in the second quarter this could of been a very different outcome. Dells went on a 16-0 run to take the lead behind four Delmore threes to take the second half lead. In the second half Dells was very confident to hold the ball and just let the clock run down and hang on to a eight point lead which was mostly due to free throws late.

Against Lodi the game started much the same with Lodi knocking down all their outside shots but, this time there was no Delmore three point shooting to bail them out. Delmore never really got things going in this game and was even struggling from the free throw line where he had shot over 90 % this year. Early one Colyn Buss was hitting the three to keep the Chiefs somewhat close and in the second half he just wasn't getting his looks from three point range. Once again Wimann and Delmore were forced to take the majority of the shots. This game Lodi was just on fire and it didn't matter what the Chiefs did when they had the ball they weren't gonna be able to come back. The length and size of Lodi just bothered them too much and Lodi was able to get the ball in the middle of the Dells zone and find their team mate going baseline for easy baskets. Dells got close in the fourth quarter when Mike Dickman started getting some shots off, scoring all 13 of his points in the fourth quarter but, it was just alittle too late. Now I will just be able to set back and watch some great basketball for the three days of state which actually makes the games a little more enjoyable.

Madison Memorial wins Regional

It has to be good to be the Madison Memorial basketball team. They have been to state nine straight years and things just keep falling into place for them to make it a tenth time. This years team isn't nearly as strong as last years team but, their sectional as a whole isn't really that strong either. Their two top teams standing in their way were Sun Prairie and Mukwonago. Sun Prairie who beat Memorial once this year ended up getting upset last night to Middleton who Memorial has defeated twice this year already and then will more then likely meet Mukwonago in Sun Prairie which will give Memorial somewhat of a home court advantage.

Madison Memorial 87 Madison East 54

This game was just flat out Memorials size and pressing that one them this game. East is a very undersized team and with Memorial's size they were able to dominate on the glass getting second and third opportunities. I'm not sure if it's because Memorial had the size advantage of they were looking to feature there junior big man but, Memorial really looked to force feed Tyler Lindquist in the post and Lindquist was able to get position and score at will. In the second half they didn't look inside as much but, there was no need to as the were able to force turnovers over and over and get easy buckets on the other end. Memorial really looked to push the tempo whether it was on the turnovers or rebounds. In the third quarter Memorial was able to push their lead from seven to 27 by, pushing that tempo.

Top Players
Jester Weah 6'4 senior Madison Memorial- Really showed his whole package of athleticism. Hitting the midrange jumper, running the court, and putting back offensive rebounds.
Tyler Lindquist 6'6 junior Madison Memorial- As always really battled on the glass on both ends of the court and really showed the ability to score in the post when his team mates went to him.

Madison Memorial 59 Madison Lafollette 56

Unlike the previous night this game was a real struggle for Memorial throughout. This game was fast passed early on but, Lafollette was able to slow the pace and look inside to Nygel Drury who was able to score over the Memorial big man who were strapped with foul trouble early. Also the strong play of sophomore point guard, Darold Thomas, against the Memorial pressure allowed them to keep this game close throughout. Memorial wasn't hitting anything but, they were able to grab offensive rebounds and get put backs and score but, not nearly as easy as things were against East in the previous night. In the second half Memorial upped the pressure defense a notch and forced Lafollette into numerous turnovers even before they got the ball past half court. With the Memorial big man hindered with foul trouble it was Memorials little guards Shareef Smith and Julian Walters who had huge second halfs. Smith more then Walters but, they able to penetrate with no fear and finish with a variety of moves over larger defenders. Memorial was up by eight in the third quarter as they game got to a frenzied pace which really favored Memorial but, the defense and patience of Lafollette allowed themselves to claw back into the game. Throughout most of the game Memorial actually hit their free throws but, some missed free throws late allowed Lafollette a shot late they was taken just after the buzzer to tie it up. The shot did go down but, it was clearly after the buzzer.

Top Players
Shareef Smith 5'10 sophomore Memorial- With no one really taking over on the offensive end for Memorial Smith stepped up in the second half and was able to score over and around much bigger defenders. Was also very clutch from the free throw line throughout the entire game.
Jester Weah 6'4 senior Memorial- Just his normal self doing all the dirty work rebounding and running the court.
Nygel Drury 6'5 senior Lafollette- Took advantage of Memorial's foul trouble and score at will on the inside.

Even with Sun Prairie losing Memorial still isn't a lock to make state. Middleton missed a three point shot late that would of allowed them to beat Memorial and then they have Mukwonago awaiting them in the game to go to state.

Portage over Madison Edgewood

As I suspected I didn't do any more tournament predictions so glad I did the two I did as they are the two big ones to watch for. Tournaments have started now and on a night when there really isn't much for games I decided to take in the local game in the town where I work and watch Portage played Madison Edgewood. I knew with Edgewood you would always get a team that played with a ton of heart, hustle, and very disciplined. The heart and hustle were there but, not always the discipline. Unlike the Edgewood teams of the past they really didn't work the ball as much and took the first shot that was there.

Portage really came out firing early on and seemed to be riding the energy of playing at home in a playoff game. Ian Taylor came out firing hitting three first half three point shots and was the steadying influence throughout the game. Watching the game it felt like Portage was just running away with the game but, when you looked at the scoreboard Edgewood was always within striking distance. Portage did finally get some room late in the first half as Edgewood turned the ball over a few times which allowed Portage to build a nine point half time lead. In the second half Edgewood got their outside shooting going as they were led by Nicholas Wiese who came off the bench in the first half but, started the second half and he was huge for Edgewood. Everytime Wiese was able to get his feet set he was able to knock down the outside shot. In the fourth quarter Portage started turning the ball over and with the hot shooting of Edgewood and Wiese it was a three point game with 56 seconds left in the game. Edgewood showed some lack of discipline as they came down and took the very first shot they saw which was a miss. Portage hit their free throws late to seal the game and sneak away with a win.

Top Players
Ian Taylor 6'1 senior Portage- Really was a steadying influence on the game running the point and was really hitting the threes from the outside.
Daniel Beck 6'3 senior Portage- Was very strong with the ball in the post and showed a great leaping ability in rebounding and blocking shots.
Nicholas Wiese 6'2 senior Edgewood- If he was given the open shot from the outside the shot was going to fall.
Jeffrey Zellner 5'10 junior Edgewood- Really liked this kid as a point guard. Handles the ball well, really looks to distribute to team mates, can hit the outside shot, or take the ball strong to the rim.

Box Score
Portage 63- Taylor 22 Beck 14 Jordan Walker 12 Stian Anderson 10 Matt Bate 5 Mitchell Gray 2 Brock Holmes 0 Taylor Krocker 0 Sam Harkins 0
Edgewood 55- Wiese 16 Zellner 11 Connor McGinnis 11 Paul Mutch 8 Samuel Wolfe 4 Alexander Wendler 3 SamuelSchemmel 2 Daniel Miller 0

Round one is done and we have only four rounds to go until we reach state. I know this write up wasn't the greatest but, this wasn't a huge game and I just couldn't get myself into it.
