Border Battle

Yesterday was the annual Border Battle that has taken place for the past eight years. I've said this before but, this is a great event as it allows people to watch six of the top teams from both Wisconsin and Minnesota and watch it all in one location. In years past there have been some great games and some real great years where games have come down to the wire and the states have split each of the teams and other years one state or the other has dominated and the games have mostly been blow outs. This year was one of the down years with Wisconsin winning all six games and most of them were done with ease. I understand that it is always hard to predict a year in advance what teams will be good but, this year the Minnesota teams just weren't that strong.

Stevens Point Pacelli 53 Rockford MN 50

I got to this game a little late so it was hard for me to get into the game. Rockford was a team that took very quick shots and if they were falling they were winning and when the shots stopped falling Pacelli was able to take the lead. Rockford played a 1-3-1 zone defense most of the game and Pacelli really did a nice job of moving the ball and finding the open player for three. Pacelli also used their size to control the boards on both ends. I didn't keep scoring in the game because I got there late so don't have the top scorers.

Waupun 47 Byron MN 42

This game was really a struggle to watch. Both teams struggled to make shots. Byron had no go to player and no one that could consistently score. Waupun's top scorer 6'3 junior Mason Domask couldn't get things going and didn't really look to score a whole lot. Both teams sat back and shot threes and the threes just weren't falling. Domask couldn't hit his shots but, he was able to drive to the free throw line and find 6'8 big man junior 6'8 Jack VandeZande who had a huge day just off Domask assists.

Milwaukee Pius 65 Simley 48

This was the two man domination in this one. Senior 6'2 Donovan Jackson was the outside man and 6'7 junior Levi Bradley was the inside man. Jackson just couldn't miss in the first quarter and could get anywhere he wanted. Bradley used his quickness to get by fellow big man. Simley 6'3 senior Sam Stensgard did his best to keep his team close knocking down threes but, he ran out of steam late in the game and I think Simley's lack of depth killed them.

Stevens Point 79 Lakeville North 58

This game was highlighted by the sharp shooting of 6'5 senior star from Lakeville JP Macura. Macura couldn't miss early on and scored the first 18 points for Lakeville, which was also all their points in the first quarter. While Lakeville was a one man team, Point was truly a team effort. In the second half it was a the sophomore show for SPASH, as 6'2 Trevor Anderson and 6'5 Sam Hauser were trading off hitting shots in the second half. It the end it was using four different defenders on Macura until they found the right match up with the 5'11 senior Jon Barnes guarding the much larger Macura.

Seymour 61 Blake 38

This game was over early as Seymour's 1-3-1 really seemed to confuse Blake, who just wasn't ready to play in this one. 6'6 senior Sandy Cohen really caused problems for the Blake guards out top and the threes just weren't falling for Blake either. Not a whole much to say with this game anyway with the blow out. Cohen had a good game as did fellow senior 6'5 Dakota Oskey who used his athleticism and shooting ability to be the leading scorer.

Kaukauna 58 Centennial 52

Was the best game of the day wire to wire. Kaukauna was dropping the threes all game long and Centennial kept clawing back into the game. For Kaukauna it was the three guard monster of 6'2 senior Kyle Schalow, and juniors 5'11 Derek Hansen and 6'1 Carter Belling. Centennial countered them with their one guard 6'3 Tyler Peterson. This game got very chippy late and I thought for sure we would see a technical but, never got one. Kaukauna showed a better team game and Centennial took some bad shots late and was forcing things.

All Tournament team (my personal team)

Brett O'Sullivan 6'4 senior Pacelli- Really controlled the boards on both end of the court and showed some nice post moves in the post.

Isaac Elliot 6'0 senior Pacelli- Shot the three real well, as well as the mid range jumper. Always seemed to find the open shot against the zone.

Brock Deering 6'5 senior Rockford- Didn't it all for them. Didn't score a ton but, did all the little things. Ran the point at times and was the top rebounder in the game.

Mason Domask 6'3 junior Waupun- Didn't score a ton but, he was the reason that the Waupun big men had a really good game.

Donovan Jackson 6'2 senior Pius- Was one of the most impressive players on the day. Showed a very smooth touch from the outside, finished at the rim in a variety of ways, and was the quickest player on the court.

Levy Bradley 6'7 junior Pius- Showed a great ability to get to the rim from the free throw line and ran the court very well. Had a nice facial dunk on the 6'10 guy from Simley.

Sam Stensgard 6'3 junior Simley- Played with a lot of fire and competitiveness in the game. Shot the three very well.

Sam Hauser 6'5 sophomore Stevens Point-  Shot the three well, as well as the mid range jumper.

Trevor Anderson 6'2 sophomore Stevens Point- Hardnosed competitive player that runs the point well and looks for his team mates to score. Very good shooter as well hitting the three and the mid range shot.

JP Macura 6'5 senior Lakeville North- Best player of the day. Could get his shot at any time and that shot could be from anywhere on the court. A guy that knows how to score shooting, driving, or picking up the garbage buckets.

Dakota Oskey 6'3 senior Seymour- Ultimate competitor. Players extremely hard and can do a little big of everything.

Sandy Cohen 6'5 senior Seymour- He is very bit of 6'5 and is extremely long. Handles the ball very well, shoot the three, and his best ability is finishing at the rim.

JR Bascom 6'7 senior Blake- One of the few positives for Blake. Showed a very nice mid range jump shot and is a very good rebounder.

Kyle Schalow 6'2 senior Kaukauna- Sharp shooter from the outside and is the leader of this team.

Derek Hansen 5'11 junior Kaukauna- Another great shooter and hard nosed player.

Tyler Peterson 6'3 senior Centennial- Probably the most competitive player that I saw on the day. Didn't look like it but, was a pretty good player putting the ball on the floor and scoring and could hit the three as well.

Double Digit Scorers
JP Macura Lakeville North 36
Donovan Jackson Pius 30
Trevor Anderson Stevens Point 23
Sam Stensgard Simley 22
Dakota Oskey Seymour 21
Levi Bradley Pius 21
Tyler Peterson Centennial 20
Brett O'Sullivan Pacelli 20

Derek Hansen Kaukauna 13
Tyler Coble Byron 13
Buster Meyer Byron 11
Kevin Grow Centennial 11
Mason Domask Waupun 10

Was a very long day for me but, was well worth it.

Royal over Hillsboro

On Tuesday night I got invited by a couple friends to take in the Royal basketball game because they knew a few guys that are on the team. I figured why not. I love high school basketball and this would give the opportunity to watch the type of game I wouldn't of watched normally. The Scenic Bluffs is typically one of the better Division Five conferences around, so I figured it would be a decent game anyway. Hillsboro was tied in second in conference and Royal was the team that we knew some of the guys.

I'll be honest I did pay as much attention to this game as normal because I was kind of there to hang out with my friends. Early on in the game neither team could hit an outside shot and both team seemed to just be throwing the ball up to the rim. Early on Hillsboro was led by 6'3 sophomore Max Stockwell who was able to get to the rim and score or get fouled, going to the free throw line and hitting his shots. Nothing was going Royal's way until late in the first half when their star 6'0 senior Jordan Baeseman went off scoring six straight points late to either tie the game or give Royal the slight lead. Unfortunately I forgot to write down the half time score.

In the second half fouling was the undoing of Hillsboro, as the made some dumb fouls which allowed Royal to get to the line in the third quarter where they were not real solid but, they were at the line so much that it didn't make a difference. Royal took the six point lead in the third. Their were only three, three point shots hit in the game and two of them came from Baeseman and the other from 5'9 Hillsboro senior Grant Jefferies. Neither team played great in this one as Royal gave Hillsboro every opportunity to come back in this game and they just couldn't capitalize. Final score was Royal 52 Hillsboro 49.

Top Players
Jordan Baeseman 6'0 senior Royal- Easily was the best player on the court in the game. Was able to get open at will it seemed but, his shot wasn't always falling but, it was falling enough that he scored 25 points in the game. Baeseman really controlled this game throughout even when he wasn't scoring he was doing a great job running the offense.

Max Stockwell 6'3 sophomore Hillsboro- Was able to drive the baseline all night long. When he wasn't making baskets he was getting fouled and hitting his free throws.

Box Score
Royal 52- Baeseman 25 Trae Ness 10 Brandon Retzlaff 8 Adam Vieth 5 Joshua Murray 5 Michael Salamonski 3 Charlie Brandt 0
Hillsboro 49- Stockwell 19 Matt Anderson 9 Brandon Stanek 8 Grant Jefferies 5 Joey Helgerson 4 Avery Rueckheim 4 Dan Benish 0 Brock Borchardt 0 Spencer Bjornsen 0

Honestly I was very surprised that Royal was able to beat Hillsboro and really expected Hillsboro to be better. I'm not sure that this was because Hillsboro just had a bad game or the Scenic Bluffs really isn't that good of a conference.

Sun Prairie over Madison West

In a big Big Eight match up Sun Prairie claimed a huge victory of Madison West. Coming into the game West was second in the conference while Sun Prairie was fourth. Afterwards they were tied in third and only a half game behind second place Beloit. Sun Prairie really should be a lot better then what their record has shown and it seems that their season is starting to turn around.

The first two times that I have watched Sun Prairie play their big man 6'5 senior Shane Waldon has gotten into foul trouble early and was a non factor but, in this game Waldon was huge and was probably the reason that Sun Prairie won. Early on West was getting open threes and knocking them down led by their senior guard trio of 5'8 Marquise Pollard, 6'1 Terrell McFadden, and 6'3 Malik Clements. West took the early first quarter lead 20 to 12. McFadden did a pretty solid job on Sun Prairie's star 6'3 junior Nick Noskowiak. When Noskowiak was able to get free his shots just weren't falling tonight and West had some good help defense as 6'5 senior Harold Russell blocked multiple shots of Noskowiak's. Sun Prairie's defense and the offensive rebounding of Waldon kept them close and cut the lead to four at half.

In the second half Sun Prairie really took over outscoring West 24 to 11 in the third quarter. Noskowiak was able to get things going to the rim, Waldon continued his strong play on the glass, and 6'5 junior JT Ruffin used his ball handling and quickness to get by the West big men and score at the rim. Clements and McFadden continued to look for their shots and those shots weren't falling in the second half. I believe Clements and McFadden each hit one three a piece in the second half. In the fourth Sun Prairie looked to run time out spreading the floor which allowed Noskowiak, Ruffin, and also 6'1 Malik Robinson to get to the rim and score. It really was a four headed monster for Sun Prairie while West's only consistent scorer was Clements. SP won 74-63.

Top Players
Nick Noskowiak 6'3 junior Sun Prairie- Did a nice job of running the offense and not forcing things when McFadden was doing a good job defending him. Late in the game did a nice job driving to the rim and forcing the contact.

Shane Waldon 6'5 senior Sun Prairie- As I said early was the reason that Prairie won the game. Really was a beast on the offensive glass and blocked a couple shots. Had a nice put back dunk as well.

JT Ruffin 6'5 junior Sun Prairie- Really a smooth big man that is next to impossible to stop when he goes to his left.

Terrell McFadden 6'1 senior Madison West- Did a great job against Noskowiak keeping him out of the lane and limiting his outside looks. Also hit some big three point shots in the game.

Malik Clements 6'3 senior Madison West- Unstoppable in the first half. Was hitting threes and slicing into the Sun Prairie zone and scoring. Struggled a bit in the second half but, still had a huge game.

Box Score  (starters in italics)
SP 74- Noskowiak 18 Waldon 17 Ruffin 17 Robinson 12 Michael Marchese 4 Sam Kerr 2 Nate Oehrlein 2 Nate Verstegen 2 Josh Hill 0 Holden Buie 0
West 63- Clements 24 McFadden 13 Semaj Graham 10 Russell 6 Pollard 5 Juwun Pettigrew 2 Sam Meyer 2 Aubrey Johnson 1 Ari Davis 0 Mario Scott 0

As I said Sun Prairie seems to be turning things around and may be able to make a run in the playoffs and are capable of beating any team in the conference or in the regional. On the other side Madison West is a team that could beat some good teams because they have the high scoring Clements along with McFadden and Pollard. When you have great guards and a big scorer you can beat anyone.

Player Rankings

I haven't had much of a chance to post lately but, figured since I'm just sitting home watching football on New Years figured it was time to do a player rankings. With the way things have been going I'm going to have a player ranking today at the mid point and then probably not again until the end of the year. As in the past my rankings will solely be based on the games that I saw a player play this year. For example Diamond Stone is probably one of the better players I saw play this year but, in the game I saw he didn't play very good which will cause him to be lower in the rankings then he should. My overall rankings will be all classes together and players from other states while my rankings by class will solely be players from Wisconsin.

1. Kevon Looney 6'9 senior Milwaukee Hamilton- Really showed that he is a top 10 player nationally. Last year showed all the post moves and this year was money from the outside, which pushed me to truly believe in this kid. Also handles the ball well.
2. LaMonte Bearden 6'3 senior Germantown- Ultra quick player with very quick hands. Superior athlete, that can shoot the three, get to the rim. and set up his team mates. Should of been a high major player.
3. Matt Heldt 6'10 junior Neenah- Love this kids game. One of the best seven footers I've seen play. Has a nice touch around the rim with either hand, moves very well, and blocks shots.
4. Riley LaChance 6'2 senior Brookfield Central- Smooth is the best word to describe him. A true point guard in every aspect. Look to set team mates up early but, late in the game he was taking the shots and you were surprised when the ball didn't go in.
5. Nick Noskowiak 6'3 junior Sun Prairie- Very tough from the outside shooting the three. Has the euro step down and can score in a variety of ways at the rim.
6. Jaylen Key 6'7 junior Homestead- Last year played outside more and showed he could hit the 15 footer. This year showed a great post game with his back to the basket, nearly impossible to stop.
7. Brandon Key 6'0 junior West Allis Central- Another true point guard that can really control the game without having to score. Very smooth like LeChance. Seems to be quick but, is always in control.
8. Marcus White 6'5 senior Milwaukee Vincent- Does a little bit of everything. Whether playing in the post, running the point, or hitting outside shots.
9. David Hamilton 5'9 junior Milwaukee North- Just a flat out scorer with unlimited range. Yes takes too many shots but, he hits a lot too.
10. Brady Ellingson 6'4 senior Sussex Hamilton- Plays off his team mates very well. Struggled in the game I saw but, cuts really well and comes off screens well.
11. Cam Ward 6'2 senior Marshall- When he gets his feet set he's going to knock the shot down. For the most part lets the game come to him.
12. Diamond Stone 6'10 junior Dominican- A beast in the inside. Has a great post game and blocks a ton of shots.
13. Jake Showalter 6'4 senior Germantown- May be the top three point shooter in the state. Gets his feet set so quick that when he gets the ball the shot may be going up.

18. Elijah Goodman 6'5 senior Brookfield Central- Despite his size moves well and played solid defense on Looney. Good rebounder but, can score as well in the post.
19. Tyree Kendricks 6'3 junior Milwaukee Vincent- Another gunner scoring the ball. Has a nice three point shot and takes the ball hard to the rim and can finish.

21. Luke McDonnell 6'9 junior Dubuque Senior- Big man with a nice touch around the rim, blocks shots, and rebounds well.
22. Shareef Smith 5'10 junior Madison Memorial- A decent three point shooter. When he has the ball in his hands is as quick as any one and can really finish in transition.
23. JT Ruffin 6'5 junior Sun Prairie- Another guy that does a little bit of everything can finish at the rim, handle the ball, and shoot from the outside.
24. Jerrod Walton 6'5 senior Homestead- Very athletic player that has added the outside shot to his game.
